About Beard Transplant
A beard transplant is a form of hair transplant where the hair is taken from another part of the body, usually the back of the neck or under the chin and transplanted to the face. During hair transplant procedure an average of 4,000 to 7,000 hairs can be transplanted. It is possible to graft two hairs at once to give a more natural and healthy appearance to the beard. Since this procedure takes place on the face, extra care must be taken for the direction of grafting for the hair to grow in the right way.
Beard Transplant Methods
The first step in beard transplantation is always the consultation. During the consultation, the doctor examines the patient and after listening to their expectations, explains what can be done. Beard transplant surgery is done with the same technology used to perform hair transplant surgery. As such, the patient must have a sufficient number of hairs in a donor area that adequately match the color and texture of the existing beards. The new shape to be given to the beard is designed in the most suitable way for the patient and the face, in line with their wishes and needs.
After the patient approves the new beard shape designed specifically for them, the actual transplantation begins. Beard transplantation should always be carried out by experts in a sterile area. FUE technique used in beard transplantation is performed using local anesthesia. The follicles are taken from the donor region. Then they are implanted into the channels opened in the beard area by special blades. The growing direction of the beard hairs is different for each person and changes from one part of the beards to another.
After the operation is complete, it is possible to return back to the work after a day’s rest, depending on the doctor’s suggestion.
On the other hand the FUE technique, which started to be applied after 2002, has yielded very successful and comfortable results. The primary difference of the FUE beard transplant method compared to the previous beard transplant method is that the beard follicles in the nape region are collected one by one without creating a linear incision. In the graft collection process, small incisions are formed around the follicular unit using small punch tips and the beard follicles are collected one by one as invivo and planted in the area where the beard loss occurs. In the beard transplantation process with the FUE method, there is no need for stitches since there is no incision in the donor area and therefore no permanent scar is formed. In addition, other parts of the body can be used as a donor area with this method.
In FUT technique, which has been used for beard transplantation since the 90’s, beard follicles are taken from the donor area together with the skin after local anesthesia is utilized. In the FUT technique, which is a surgical operation, stitching is mandatory in the area where the incision is made. Sutures used in the donor area should be removed after 1 week. While FUT technique is more affordable than other beard transplantation methods, it leaves scars. For this reason, it is not a preferred method these days.
Contrary to what is known, DHI method is not a transplant method that gives denser results than the Fue method. This process is not recommended for planting large areas. This method can be used for small and local areas. Fue beard transplant method is recommended for a more frequent transplant.
Beard Transplantation Process
Beard transplantation process is a procedure that must be followed carefully from the decision stage to the result stage. Choosing the beard transplantation center and your doctor, where the beard transplantation process will be performed together with you, is the most important point of the process. After choosing the beard transplantation center and your doctor, the next step is selecting the hairline design and having the beard transplant operation that your doctor has planned.
On the day of beard transplantation, the first step is to sterilize the beard transplantation area and apply anesthetics. Then, according to the method used, beard follicles are removed from the donor area and recipient holes are created in the direction of the existing beard. After this the hair follicles are planted at correct angles in the planned area to achieve a natural look.
After the beard transplantation, applications related to the region where the transplant is performed and the healing of the wounds on the skin where the transplantation is performed are carried out. In this process, PRP provides easy healing of wounds and nourishes the beard follicles. Precise maintenance is required for both the donor and the transplant area for 15 days after this process.
During the beard transplant operation sedatives are given under supervision of the anesthesiologist, so no pain is felt. These sedatives are a controlled sedative drug application that creates sleepiness in the patient, which allows the patient to relax and calm down. Although the patient is conscious, there may be temporary memory loss. The sedatives are provided in different types and amounts according to the needs of the patient. These sedatives can also be used safely and effectively with young children. While beard transplantation is performed with minimum pain due to the use of sedation, there is always the option to not to use sedation if the patient prefers so.
Are You the Right Candidate for Beard Transplant?
Sadly, not everyone is a good candidate for a beard transplant. It is necessary to have a consultation with the clinic and the doctor before the procedure to see if the patient fits the criteria for the beard transplant. Patients also must have realistic expectations from the beard transplant procedure.
Beard transplant surgery is done with the same technology used to perform hair transplant surgery. As such, the patient must have a sufficient number of hairs in a donor area that adequately match the color and texture of the existing beard in order to be a good candidate for the procedure. This usually is not a problem for the majority of candidates.
If a person has a thinning beard or one with uneven patches of growth, has scarring in the beard region of the face from accidents, surgeries, burns, or another traumatic event that one wishes to conceal, wants to have a thicker, fuller beard the one they have currently, wants to have a fuller, thicker mustache or sideburns, then that person can usually be a good candidate for beard transplant.
