The necessity of shaving the hair will depend on the technique to be used. With the FUE hair transplant technique, it is necessary to shave the donor area, usually in the back of the scalp. The follicles in this area are immune to the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, which is usually the primary reason for the hair loss on the top of the head. The area of the skin transplanted is also unable to protect itself from sun exposure for at least a few months following the hair transplant procedure. The cells found in every human being called chromatophores are responsible for pigmentation of the skin, and they darken to protect the skin from further exposure, when they are exposed to the sun. When a section of the skin is transplanted, these cells either die or go dormant for a while. In most cases it will take several months for these cells to regenerate. This will leave the transplanted skin at greater risk for sun damage. Hair transplant techniques involve several layers of the skin, and is not limited only to the surface layer, called epidermis. While the epidermis heals relatively quickly, deeper layers are much slower to heal. If damage from sun exposure penetrates the epidermis, the underlying layers, tissues and hair follicles that have not yet healed can be damaged, and lead to a failure in hair transplant itself.
