Hair transplant recovery is simple when you know what’s normal — and what isn’t.

This guide gives you:

  • A day-by-day timeline (first 14 days)
  • Week-by-week expectations (Month 1 to Month 3)
  • Month-by-month growth milestones (Month 4 to Month 12)

Quick Recovery Checklist (first 10 days)

The goal is simple: protect grafts, reduce swelling, and avoid infection risks.

  • ✅ First 72 hours: protect grafts (no pressure, no rubbing)
  • ✅ Sleep position: elevated head, avoid contact with recipient area
  • ✅ Washing: follow your clinic’s wash schedule exactly
  • ✅ No gym / heavy sweating: minimum 10–14 days
  • ✅ No alcohol / smoking: ideally 7–14 days (longer is better)
  • ✅ Sun protection: avoid direct sun on scalp for several weeks
  • ✅ Take medications correctly: antibiotics / pain relief if prescribed

If your aftercare instructions are vague, that’s a red flag.

Hair transplant recovery timeline: Day-by-day

Recovery can vary by patient and technique — but the stages below are consistent for most cases.

Day 0 (procedure day)

  • Scalp feels tight and sensitive
  • Mild bleeding or oozing can happen early
  • You’ll be instructed on sleeping and medication

Day 1

  • Swelling may start (forehead area is common)
  • Grafts must be protected — no touching/scratching

Day 2–3

  • Swelling usually peaks around this window
  • Redness continues; donor area can feel sore
  • Continue sleeping elevated

Day 4–7

  • Scabbing forms in the recipient area
  • Itching may increase (do not scratch)
  • Gentle washing continues as instructed

Day 8–10

  • Scabs start softening and gradually lifting
  • Redness starts reducing for many patients
  • Donor area looks more “normal” each day

Day 11–14

  • Most scabs are gone or nearly gone
  • Grafts are more stable — but still treat the scalp gently
  • Many people return to normal social life around this point

Weeks 3–8: The shedding phase (don’t panic)

This is the part many patients don’t expect: transplanted hairs often shed as follicles enter a resting phase.

  • Shedding can begin around week 3–4
  • It can continue through week 6–8
  • This is normal and does NOT mean the transplant failed

Important: The follicles remain under the skin — that’s what matters.

Month-by-month growth milestones (Month 2 to Month 12)

Month 2

  • Scalp looks calmer
  • Some early “baby hairs” may appear

Month 3

  • Early growth becomes noticeable
  • Density is still low — this is the beginning, not the result

Month 4–5

  • Growth speed increases
  • Texture may be wiry at first — this improves over time

Month 6

  • Many patients see a meaningful visible improvement
  • Density is still developing

Month 7–9

  • Hair thickens and blends better
  • Styling becomes easier

Month 10–12

  • Final maturation phase
  • Texture and density typically look most natural here

What’s normal vs not normal

Usually normal

  • Swelling (first few days)
  • Redness and scabbing (first 1–2 weeks)
  • Itching (especially when scabs form)
  • Shedding (weeks 3–8)

Not normal (contact your clinic)

  • Increasing pain after day 3–4
  • Fever or chills
  • Pus, strong odor, or spreading redness
  • Sudden severe swelling or allergic reactions

How to make recovery easier (simple rules)

  • Sleep elevated for the first few nights
  • Wash gently (never pick scabs)
  • Avoid sweating/heavy workouts for 10–14 days
  • Protect scalp from sun exposure
  • Follow medication instructions exactly
