For many patients, the first hair wash after surgery is one of the most stressful parts of the recovery process. You are excited about your new hairline, but naturally cautious about touching the newly implanted grafts. When you choose a professional hair transplant in Turkey, your clinic will usually perform the initial wash before you fly home. However, once you return, keeping the scalp clean, hydrated, and protected becomes an important part of your aftercare routine. Proper washing helps protect the grafts and supports safe scab removal around the 10th day. In this step-by-step clinical guide, including our instructional videos, we explain how to wash your head safely without compromising your recovery.
Washing your hair post-surgery is divided into two distinct phases: the gentle daily washes during Days 1 to 9 and the important scab removal wash around Day 10. If you want to understand how this fits into the full early healing process, you can also review our hair transplant recovery day-by-day guide.
During the first nine days, the newly implanted grafts are establishing their blood supply and should be handled carefully. The goal is not to scrub the scalp, but to soften dried blood, keep the skin hydrated, and maintain hygiene. Rushing this process is one of the most important things to avoid after hair transplant during early recovery.
Step 1: Apply the Panthenol Lotion
Apply the medical lotion provided by your clinic over the recipient area, where the grafts are, and the donor area. Do not rub it in. Let the lotion sit for 30 to 45 minutes to soften the scabs.
Step 2: Gentle Rinsing (No Direct Showerheads)
Do not stand directly under a high-pressure showerhead during the early days. Instead, use a cup or bowl to gently pour lukewarm water over your head to rinse off the lotion. The water should be neither too hot nor too cold.
Step 3: The Foam Shampoo
Pump the special medical shampoo into your hands to create a thick foam. Gently pat or tap the foam onto the recipient area. Do not rub or massage the grafts. You can clean the donor area at the back of your head slightly more firmly if your clinic allows it, as this may help relieve itchiness and support hygiene in the extraction zone. For a broader view of how the donor area heals, review our donor area management guide.
Step 4: Drying
Rinse the foam away gently with the cup. To dry, avoid rubbing with a regular cotton bath towel. Use a soft paper towel and gently tap the scalp to absorb moisture.
By around the 10th day, the grafts are usually more stable in the scalp. At this stage, removing the remaining scabs becomes important for hygiene and healing. If scabs stay on the scalp for too long, they may irritate the skin, block proper cleaning, and increase the risk of folliculitis or infection.
If you notice severe pain, pus, strong odor, fever, or unusual swelling during this phase, contact your medical team. You can also review our guide on hair transplant side effects to understand which symptoms are usually normal and which may require medical attention.
A successful hair restoration depends on both surgical planning and aftercare discipline. Unfortunately, the medical tourism industry includes commercial brokerages and “hair mills” that provide weak follow-up once patients fly home, which is one of the issues highlighted in our guide to hair transplant Turkey red flags.
HWT Clinic is not an agency. We are a 2,500 m² fully licensed medical polyclinic in Istanbul, operated by our own in-house doctors, surgeons, and anesthesiology team. When you choose us, you are not left alone guessing how to wash your hair. Our aftercare team can monitor your progress via WhatsApp, help you perform the 10th-day scab removal correctly, and guide you through the next stages of your hair transplant recovery timeline.
For international patients, the first wash is usually part of the organized travel process before returning home. You can review the arrival, surgery day, first wash, and flight-home schedule in our hair transplant Turkey 3-day journey guide.
You can usually return to normal showering habits, including standing under moderate shower pressure, after Day 14 if all scabs have cleared and your clinic confirms that the grafts are stable. If redness, scabbing, or sensitivity continues, follow your clinic’s instructions before increasing water pressure.
A true lost graft is usually accompanied by fresh, noticeable bleeding from the exact spot where it came out. If you only see a hair shaft with a dry scab and there is no bleeding, it is usually normal shedding rather than a lost graft. If you experience bleeding or are unsure, do not rub the area further and contact your clinic with a clear photo.
It is usually recommended to continue using the medical shampoo provided by your clinic during the first month. After that, many patients can switch to a mild, paraben-free, sulfate-free baby shampoo or another gentle product approved by their clinic. Avoid harsh commercial shampoos that may irritate the healing scalp.
Mastering the washing routine is one of the most important parts of keeping the scalp clean and supporting safe early recovery. At HWT Clinic, we provide clinical protocols, video guides, and structured post-operative support to help patients navigate the washing phase with confidence.
